The Strongbox by Stephanie Jacob is a new play exploring modern domestic slavery. 80-year-old Ma and her daughter Kat are keeping homeless teenager Maudie as a slave in their London home. As Ma becomes more needy and Kat distracted by work, control shifts in the household. But will Maudie want freedom or power?
Directed by Lucy Richardson, The Strongbox premiered at London's Vault Festival, where the damp stone walls and eerie echoes enhanced the prison-like atmosphere, as audiences found themselves sitting right inside Ma's tense kitchen.
The play is published by Nick Hern Books. You can also read reviews on Exeunt and West End Wilma.
